I love travels. Well… that’s not a secret for sure, but I mean : I REALLY love travels. Because of every single thing the word « travel » means. New places, new cultures, discoveries of all kinds. And people.
People… Relationships made while on the road are definitely special. I think that people are more authentic while traveling because their routine is broken and the likelihood that an uncomfortable or, at least, an unknown situation arises is pretty high. That’s when people’s reactions reflect their own personality the most, just because they have to face their own fears, worries, phobies and so on. There is no room for hypocrisy. Hence, while traveling as a group, people face these situations together, and that creates links. Relationships made while on the road are, I think, the most valuable since they are based on honesty more than most of the others.
As an example, this year I made one of my best friends ever. On the road, pretty far from home. And thanks to that friendship I made another great friend. That was unexpected, but the best things in life are often unexpected, eh ?
Also, my recent trips with The Giving Lens gave me the opportunity to get to know a bunch of great people, all traveling with the same motivations and ideals as myself. In Tanzania this summer, I met an awesome lady from Green Bay, Wisconsin, retired from a non profit healthcare organization and, as all of us, passionate about traveling. That big hearted lady with an everlasting smile was always the first one to get surrounded by children when we got to a place, and the last one to leave. Everywhere, children nicknamed here « Bebe », a very affectionate way of saying « Grandma ». The image above is a portrait of her… well, actually a portrait of an orphan she was hugging during our visit to a local orphanage near Karatu, Tanzania.
Yeah… I need to travel. Right now.
